Hybrid off-road vehicles may sound like a misnomer, but this class of crossovers, SUVs, and trucks has in fact exploded in popularity of late. Today, we’ll be zeroing in on the best hybrid off-road vehicles with legitimate four-wheeling chops. So you won’t find any Hyundai Tucsons here, for example.

What you will find are fairly hardcore factory off-road hybrid SUVs and trucks that come straight from the assembly line ready to rock and roll. Something else these rugged hybrid SUVs have in common is an approach to hybridization that eschews Prius-like efficiency in favor of high-performance hijinks with brand names like “i-FORCE MAX” and “PowerBoost”. Aggressive, right? Let’s dive in.
We have chosen 10 hybrid vehicles from various segments that are also capable in off-road conditions. Models are ranked in no particular order.

After a brief hiatus, the latest Toyota Land Cruiser has shed its previous flabby form for a return to its legendary off-road vibe with square edges and upright surfaces. Only sold with Toyota’s i-Force Max hybrid mill, the Land Cruiser earns a spot on this list of the best hybrid 4×4 off-road models with its full-time 4WD system, solid axle rear end, locking rear and center differentials, and heavy underbody skid plate coverage. It doesn’t have the best ground clearance of the bunch, but the 2025 Land Cruiser makes up for it with features like the Multi-Terrain Monitor that shows what’s out front, around the side, and behind all from the comfort of the driver’s seat.
The Land Cruiser is more than capable of a mildly challenging off-road course and clearly capable of much, much more intense duty. We were particularly impressed with the rear and center diff locks, although we then went through without using them, just requiring heavier use of throttle and paying attention to where the wheels were.

Though the Ford F-150 offers serious off-road machines like the Tremor and Raptor, neither of those can be fitted with the PowerBoost Hybrid engine. However, you can equip a relatively low-cost XLT crew cab model with this torque-monster hybrid mill (which is where the above price comes from). Add on the FX4 Off-Road package for an extra $1,095 to enjoy an off-road tuned suspension, Hill Descent Control, a Rock Crawl drive mode, and skid plates for the fuel tank, transfer case, and front differential.

The Jeep Wrangler with the 4xe PHEV powertrain can be had for less money in Sport S trim, but its standard 20-inch rims don’t exactly scream best off-road hybrid SUV. You could go wild and step up to a Rubicon or Rubicon X for unstoppable capability and a fat sticker price, or you could look at the retro-styled Wrangler Willys 4xe. It has 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain rubber, an electronically locking rear differential, heavy-duty Dana axles at both ends, and factory-fitted rock rails. The removable doors and roof only add to the appeal of this hybrid-powered off-roader.

You may start noticing a theme of Toyota dominating the rankings of best hybrid off-road SUVs, as evidenced by the 2025 4Runner TRD Pro. It’s one of five Toyotas on this list, six if you include the Lexus LX. And with the all-new 4Runner in TRD Pro guise, it’s a excellent proposition. Over 10 inches of ground clearance, a 33-degree approach angle, 2.5-inch Fox internal bypass QS3 dampers with remote reservoirs, a front stabilizer disconnect mechanism, and those glorious TRD Pro wheels. OK, the wheels have no impact on the 4Runner’s 4×4 skills, but they sure look nice.

Pop quiz: Is the six-figure Range Rover PHEV more likely to be found A) in the Whole Foods parking lot or B) at the trailhead? Anyone that answers B has failed the test, but that doesn’t mean the jet set can’t go off-road in their ritzy Range Rover. Far removed from its farm implement-like past, the 2025 Range Rover still manages to deliver genuine off-roading capability from nearly a foot of ground clearance courtesy of its air suspension to almost three feet of water wading possibilities. And hey, that PHEV powertrain even delivers a usable 53 miles of silent driving range. Neat.

Bursting with bronze-accented macho vibes – dig that bed-mounted utility bar – the Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter is also packing a potent hybrid engine. Fed by a pillar-mounted air intake snorkel and riding high on 33-inch all-terrain tires, the Trailhunter is Toyota’s overland rig for those who don’t want to go the DIY route. It’s packed with drool-worthy off-road gear like a high-clearance front bumper, frame-mounted steel rock rails, steel underbody protection, and even an integrated air compressor. That #AdventureLife is calling.

Featuring the automaker’s Quadra-Drive II 4WD system, Selec-Terrain traction management system, and a 47.4:1 crawl ratio, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk can jack up the Quadra-Lift air suspension with semi-active dampers to clear just about 11 inches of obstacles. Bloated with the enormity of its three-ton curb weight, 583 lb-ft of torque, and eyebrow-raising $80,000+ price tag, the gigantic Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro can smash through just about anything on the trail all while housing up to eight occupants. Showing off the oxymoronic nature of its hybrid naming, the big Toyota achieves just 19 mpg around town. But we forgive it these foibles as the TRD Pro variant can do serious trail work with its FOX suspension, locking rear diff, Crawl Control technology, and Falken Wildpeak all-terrain rubber.

Lexus in name only, the 2025 LX700h Overtrail cavorts along the trail with the same Toyota engine found in the Sequoia, albeit with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid mill making a bit more juice. Earth is one of the LX700h Overtrail color choices, which seems aproppriate given this off-road-centric variant’s running gear. As in front and rear locking differentials, full-time 4WD, and an Active Height Control system. Is it the very best hybrid off-road SUV? Perhaps not, but it’s certainly one of the most elegant.

LIke many of its hybrid stablemates, the 2025 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro sports an absolutely spectacular engine. Putting out 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, it’s a case study in the wonders of applying hybridization in the name of high performance. With the Tundra, you also get a healthy dose of pickup truck utility to go with off-roading abilities in the form of an 11,175-pound tow rating and 5.5-foot cargo bed. Factor in the Xply Armor high-strength underbody protection, trick FOX internal bypass shocks, 1.1-inch suspension lift, and righteous LED front light bar – and you have one highly capable off-road hybrid full-size pickup truck.
Honorable Mention: 2025 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid
Although considered more of a luxurious, on-road SUV than a hardcore off-roader, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is competitive on the dirt. With the available air suspension at its highest setting, it has 9.3 inches of ground clearance, which falls between the other luxury models on this list, with the Range Rover at 11.6 inches and the Lexus LX Overtrail at 8.1 inches.
The Porsche has a wading depth of up to 11 inches and approach/departure angles of 25.6/21.9 degrees, respectively. On your way back home from your outdoor adventures, the Cayenne impresses with its 463-hp V6 hybrid powertrain and 4.6-second 0-60 sprint time. It also has a handy 28-mile all-electric range.
The downside of the Porsche’s wide spread of talents is a base price of $97,200, before options.
