The next-generation inline-4 engines currently under development for Toyota are being designed and engineered by Gazoo Racing, the company’s highly successful racing arm. Toyota Gazoo Racing has won championships in a wide range of top-level professional motorsports over the past decade, including three Super GT championships, three World Rally Championship constructors’ titles, and four World Endurance Championships. In a turn of events as unusual as it is excellent, that organization will be turning its focus to engineering Toyota’s next set of engines for both performance and everyday vehicles, as reported by the UK’s Car Magazine.

Toyota Going All In
The engines in question are Toyota’s upcoming 1.5 and 2.0 liter inline-4 powerplants, with quoted outputs so far including 400 and 592 horsepower. A full family of engines is currently in the works, including what has been called the G20E, which has already been shown powering a late model Lexus-derived sedan used as a powertrain mule. The engines are powerful, light, and compact on their own, but will be paired with electric motors for even more efficiency and power, depending on the application.

8 Outstanding Toyota Engines We Love
Despite being known as a reliable economy car brand, Toyota has produced some incredibly successful and powerful engines over the years.
What makes all of this especially interesting now is that very few OEMs are actually still developing new internal combustion engines at all. Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru have shared resources on some new engine projects, with each company putting their own spin on their next ICE motors. Dodge is getting the ancient Hemi back into production, but when it comes to genuinely brand new, clean-sheet engines that make the most of current technology, the industry has largely gone dormant. For now, at least. Electrification has had a bit of a ride, but electric vehicles have now become their own market force, even helping prop up flagging ICE sales for BMW, for instance.
New ICE Blood Runs Hot
New roaring, flame-throwing, clutch-kicking internal combustion engines are sure to get enthusiasts excited for the future. Toyota has been on a generational hot streak as of late, with a full lineup of three serious enthusiast vehicles catering to every taste and almost every budget. Now they seem to be doubling down on giving the performance people what they want, in ways only a multi-championship winning race team could. If their anime is anything to go by, we’re in for quite a show.
