Highway 26 right westbound lane and the Oregon Zoo off-ramp were closed for about an hour during the incident.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Two people were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after their car caught fire on Highway 26, briefly closing the westbound off-ramp to the Oregon Zoo.
Portland Fire & Rescue said a mechanical problem caused the engine compartment to ignite, which disabled the car’s brakes.
The driver told the passenger to “roll out” of the vehicle while steering toward boulders at the base of the ramp’s slope, according to the agency.
The passenger was taken to a hospital in the first arriving ambulance, and the driver was transported in a second ambulance. Their conditions are unknown.
The highway’s right westbound lane and the Oregon Zoo off-ramp were closed for about an hour.
