GENERAL Motors has urgently recalled hundreds of thousands of cars after a driver’s vehicle stopped without warning on the highway.
Reports suggest some 800,000 SUVs and pickup trucks made by the automotive giant will need to be taken back due to the issue – affecting motorists nationwide.
In a report by KSTP, Gary Johnson, a 2023 GMC Sierra pickup truck owner, revealed that he was driving along Highway 95 in Princeton, Minnesota, earlier this month when the engine died while he was traveling at 65 mph.
He told reporters: “It was scary as hell. I am going to be honest. I am, uh, I am just beside myself.”
After the incident, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated the cause of the engine failure and found it affected motorists across the country that own GM trucks and SUVs with a 6.2-liter V8 engine.
The widespread problem affects multiple makes and models between 2021 and 2024, made up of the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade EVS, Chevrolet Tahoe, Silverado 1500 and Suburban, and the GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.
Johnson added that consumers who own these vehicles need to get them to their dealer as quickly as possible.
He said: “It could cause an accident because it could shut down with no notice.
“Anything could have happened. I guess I am lucky, you know, that I wasn’t trying to pass somebody, with somebody coming towards me.”
Currently, Johnson’s truck is at the dealership.
But Gary’s wife, Laura, said she would not drive the truck with her children inside when it’s returned.
“I don’t feel safe driving the truck, quite honestly, not knowing what is going to happen and knowing what happened to him. It frankly does frighten me,” said Laura Johnson.
GM asks customers who own these makes and models to bring them to a dealer nearest to them as soon as possible.
Earlier this month, it was reported that certain GM vehicles could be entitled to a huge sum of money as part of a $35 million settlement if they found an issue.
In some instances, car owners could be handed a total of $12,712 – all because of a historic issue with potentially thousands of vehicles.
According to Top Class Actions, GM is being forced to pay out the eye-watering sum over a fuel pump related settlement that saw GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado trucks fitted with defective engine parts.
In particular, drivers who purchased certain Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra diesel trucks from the model years between 2011 to 2016 will qualify.
Furthermore, it states that they must’ve been purchased from GM-authorized dealerships in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania or Texas, and between the dates of March 1, 2010, to September 13, 2024.
For those who think they might qualify but aren’t sure, they can check their eligibility using the VIN lookup tool on the settlement website.
