The South Korean automaker has previously stated it would be in a strong position to survive the tariffs from the Trump Administration thanks to its strong lineup of gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles, as well as a big investment in American manufacturing.
“April total sales continued its upward trajectory with a 25% year-over-year increase in electrified vehicle sales, led by strong demand for the Tucson HEV. The debut of the 2026 Palisade, the seventh best-ever total sales month and record April sales across multiple models reflect our momentum and leadership in innovation, value, and performance.”
– Randy Parker, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America.

Hybrids Driving Sales
Hyundai’s huge success was seen across multiple models, with seven out of 11 models posting sales gains so far in 2025. Five models set sales records for the month of April: the Hyundai Elantra (up 30%), Santa Fe (up 28%), Sonata (up 12%), Tucson (up 41%), and Palisade (up 15%). Of these models, only the Palisade does not yet offer a hybrid, but that will change with the introduction of the 2026 model. The Hyundai Tuscon, a compact crossover that is built in Montgomery, Alabama, is the company’s bestseller with 22,054 units in April and 77,027 units so far in 2025 (up 26%).

Though the sales chart doesn’t break each model down by powertrain, Hyundai sales saw a 46% increase in hybrid sales compared to April 2024, and overall electrified sales (including PHEVs and EVs) increased by 25%. Despite these numbers, pure EVs saw a dip in sales. Ioniq 5 sales dropped by 8% in April, but are still up 14% in 2025. The Ioniq 6 saw a 12% drop in April and 10% through 2025, but Hyundai recently announced a facelift that should reinvigorate sales. Even the Kona, which offers both gasoline and electric powertrains, saw a 4% decrease in April and a 20% drop in 2025. The upcoming introduction of the Ioniq 9 three-row EV is expected to improve EV sales when it arrives this year.
Other Trends
Looking at Hyundai’s sales numbers, some other patterns emerge. Sedan sales are increasing, as both the Elantra and Sonata posted gains in April and so far in 2025. The Elantra even earned a spot as Hyundai’s second-best-selling vehicle, ahead of the popular Santa Fe.

On the opposite note, small crossovers like the Kona and Venue appear to be struggling, with the former posting a substantial sales drop so far this year and the latter posting a slight increase with a very limited volume. Where these vehicles are made could play a factor, since both are built in South Korea and may be subject to tariffs in the future.
