If Carb Day practice is any indication, Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 could present several interesting scenarios.
Two-time defending champion Josef Newgarden — starting in the last row because of illegal modifications made on his car during qualifying — paced the 33-car field Friday at 225.667 mph on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.
Trailing him closely were two-time winner and front-row starter Takuma Sato — though he slowed on track late in practice — and 2008 champ and No. 4 starter Scott Dixon.
Will Power, who will start last because of a similar situation to Newgarden, had the No. 5 lap Friday. Four-time race champ Helio Castroneves was 7th.
