CLEVELAND (WJW) – The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating a case of illegal street racing that leaders called careless and dangerous.
In total, 10 vehicles were significantly damaged just after midnight Saturday near East 93rd Street and Crane Avenue.

Police said two vehicles were engaged in illegal street racing when one swerved to avoid another car, lost control and hit multiple parked cars.
Public Information Officer Sgt. Freddy Diaz said the Cleveland Police Street Takeover Detail arrived within minutes due to the severity of the crash.
“Two vehicles that are pretty damaged, and then other vehicles that were in the area that were damaged as well,” Diaz said. “It’s a little bit of a puzzle to put together.”
Diaz said it’s fortunate no one died in the high-speed crash.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, and a 24-year-old male passenger were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The 20-year-old will be taken to the county jail once released, where he faces several charges, including aggravated vehicular assault.
Police said multiple weapons were also found in the vehicle. The driver of the second car was also cited.

“It’s frustrating to see the victims that are affected by this,” Diaz said. “And it’s also frustrating because our message has been consistent recently, expressing how this is irresponsible behavior.”
People who live along East 93rd Street told FOX 8 off camera that motorists often drive at high speeds in the area and were not surprised by the crash.
“There’s no one here to blame but those two individuals,” Diaz said. “They’re the ones that took the initiative. They made the decision to race illegally. They’re not little kids. Unfortunately, other people are affected because of their irresponsible acts.”
Cleveland police said this appears to be an isolated incident but added that street racing remains a problem across the country. Sgt. Diaz said the department — including the Street Takeover Detail — will continue to work to prevent this kind of activity.
