Maine’s new Winter Heating Guide provides energy-saving tips, heating resources, and program links to help residents prepare for the colder months.
AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Energy Resources has released its 2025-2026 Winter Heating Guide to help residents lower energy bills while staying safe and warm this winter.
The guide includes home heating and weatherization tips, contact information for state and local energy programs, and links to current energy prices. It also highlights assistance available through MaineHousing, Efficiency Maine, Community Action Agencies, and other partners.
“The new Winter Heating Guide is a timely resource for homeowners who are looking for ways to manage their heating bills this winter,” Michael Stoddard, executive director of Efficiency Maine, said. “I encourage Maine people to reach out to Efficiency Maine to learn about our efficiency and weatherization programs.”
Maine Public Utilities Commission Chair Phil Bartlett urged residents struggling with utility bills to act early.
Maine remains the most heating oil-dependent state in the country, leaving many households vulnerable to fluctuating fuel prices. A recent study by the Maine Office of the Public Advocate found that low-income households relying on heating oil spend about twice as much of their budgets on energy as those using electricity for heat.
Gov. Janet Mills recently announced that Maine’s reliance on heating oil has decreased by nearly 20 percent since 2018, largely due to an increase in the number of homes using high-efficiency heat pumps. The trend aligns with the state’s broader energy goals led by the newly formed Department of Energy Resources, which replaced the Governor’s Energy Office last month.
The Department of Energy Resources also lists the latest fuel and electricity prices.
