EDMONDS, Wash. — Video from police body cameras shows first responders working to save people who were in a car that plunged into the water off the Edmonds ferry dock while fleeing police Tuesday night.
Two people in the submerged Mini Cooper died, and three others were taken to the hospital after the car went into the water just after 11 p.m.
According to police, a Washington State Patrol trooper tried to stop the Mini for speeding on I-5. The car took off, and the trooper terminated the chase shortly after.

A Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw the same vehicle driving at speeds over 100 mph and again attempted to stop the car as it weaved through traffic. A sheriff’s spokesperson said the car hit speeds of 120 mph and drove into the city of Edmonds.
The deputy saw a gate at the Edmonds ferry terminal had been destroyed, and he investigated to find the Mini had plunged into the water directly past the ferry dock.
Police said the driver survived the crash and was taken into custody, but two of the passengers did not make it out and died in the water.
KOMO News obtained body camera videos of the response through a public records request on Wednesday. The videos show the perspective of two Edmonds police officers who assisted in throwing flotation devices to the survivors and pulling them from the water.
Investigators said the driver is a 29-year-old man from Tulalip and drugs or alcohol impairment are suspected factors in the crash.
