A driver had to be extricated from their vehicle and transported to the hospital after a crash into a tree that caused the vehicle’s engine to be detached from the car in Vernon Hills.
The Vernon Hills Police Department and Countryside Fire Protection District responded around 6:44 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Fairway Drive and Townline Road for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
A 911 caller initially reported the crash was a hit-and-run and someone was trapped in the vehicle at the scene.

It was later determined that the crash only involved one vehicle and was not a hit-and-run.
Vernon Hills Police Department Patrol Commander Rob Caselli said the crash occurred approximately 750 feet south of Route 60.
A Hyundai sedan left the roadway and struck a tree, causing it to fall down.

The Hyundai sustained severe front-end damage and its engine became detached from the vehicle.
Firefighters had to extricate the trapped driver from the Hyundai.
He was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Caselli said.

The driver, a 66-year-old Libertyville man, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Caselli said alcohol and drugs are not factors in the crash and no citations were issued to the driver.
Fairway Drive was briefly shut down until Ernie’s Wrecker Service responded and removed the Hyundai and the car’s engine from the roadway.
